The problem

Photos all over the place!

Besides design-adjacent stuff, my main passion is wildlife photography. Despite having done it for about 2 years at that point, I didn’t have a non-social media space to show them off - so what better context to combine my two passions into one?

The solution

A complex, online photography gallery.

I wanted more than a classic photographer’s portfolio, with a few photos and galleries inside a bland grid. Wildlife photography means a lot of different things to me, so I wanted to portray those aspects through various sections on my website: albums, database and locations.

THE CHALLENGES

Getting lost in the details

Designing a complex platform that makes sense to people other than myself takes a lot of attempts and changes. Even months after initially declaring it “complete”, I find myself tweaking and redesigning in order to improve it.

Taking the good with the bad

Plugin issues prevented a 1-for-1 website simulation, prompting a pivot to the showcase video above. This new direction unlocked greater creative freedom and leveled up my After Effects skills, specifically with the 3D camera.

Practicality

This project lives only in design as of now - though definitely not forever! Coding it in a reliable, efficient manner will take a lot of careful planning, mostly due to its large size and huge data quantity and complexity (plus the afferent backend hosting costs).
