A logo for the 2026 Bucharest National Selection Conference of European Youth Parliament Romania, used across the event for as a basis for the session's visual identity and merch.

The problem

No face for the project

I was approached by the Head Organisers of the Bucharest National Selection Conference of European Youth Parliament Romania for a logo design - one that could represent both the city and the organisation in the best way possible.

The solution

A simple, yet recognisable depiction of a memorable landmark

I chose an aerial view of the Unirii fountains in the city’s center. The simplicity of its circular shapes provided a great starting point for iterations and ensured it the landmark would remain recognisable even after considerable stylisation. To stay more in-line with EYP’s branding, I used a blue colour palette for both light and dark display options.

THE CHALLENGES

Is it still the ship of Theseus?

How many elements could I tweak visually before the original blueprint of the fountain becomes non-recognisable? As depicted in the final image above, I started from a faithful blueprint of the landmark, before adding, subtracting and embellishing various parts. The result is a balance between accuracy and looks.

The killing of darlings

Out of the four complete iterations I submitted for review, the final choice was not my favourite - and that’s okay. This is sometimes hard to accept as a designer, but a necessary concession in most projects.

Building for the future

I wasn’t in charge of anything beyond the logo - such as patterns, social media posts, posters, badges, placards, etc. Even so, I designed the logo to have enough repeating elements or visual anchors to provide a solid base for these further steps. The results were, to my pleasure, visible across the entirety of the event.
